Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County Training for Defusing Hatred

Last spring the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County began a training program called Defusing Hatred. The program has already been successfully presented in several different venues. The intent is to teach nonviolent communication skills, creative resistance, and other tools for responding to uneasy situations and hate speeches. Several more opportunities are available.

  • Thursday, October 19, 7:00 pm – St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Rd., Walnut Creek.  Simple potluck supper begins at 6:00 pm.
  • Sunday, October 22, 1:30 pm – Unity Walnut Creek, 1871 Geary Rd., Walnut Creek
  • Tuesday, November 14, 7:00 pm – Congregation B’nai Shalom, 74 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek
  • Sunday, December 3, 12:30 pm – Community of Christ, 786 2nd Ave., Walnut Creek

The program was initiated in response to the increased violence and aggression in our community, our country, and our world. The visual presentation is informative and interactive and followed by conversation and hands-on experience.

Institutional and personal forms of interruption of cultural oppression will be shared. Role-playing will be used to demonstrate situations and methods of how to be present for others. A brief history of hate crimes in Contra Costa County as well as a review of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights will round out the program.

“We host this program with the hope of building communities of care and protection of the vulnerable around us especially in this time of heightened tension and public acts of aggression,” commented Rev. Will McGarvey, Executive Director of the Council.

These gatherings are offered to congregations and members of the Council. To learn more or to schedule a program for your organization, please contact. Rev. McGarvey at 925.597.9797 or
